On July 19, 2012 Dr. Deukmedjian answered questions about the top 10 issues for spine surgeons after the Supreme Court upheld healthcare reform. According to Becker's Spine Review, "At the end of June, the Supreme Court upheld the individual mandate for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, which aims to reform the healthcare system in America. The Court upheld ACA but struck down the provision of mandatory Medicaid expansion, leaving this decision to the individual states." |

My number one concern for spine surgery in 2012 is intrusion by insurance companies in your spinal health.
Spine care in America is being destroyed by insurers at an unimaginable and unprecedented rate. Every day spine surgeons are discovering insurance company created roadblocks to their ability to care and provide for their patients. |

Or perhaps a more serious flare up of a disc or facet problem. Did you know that back problems are in your genes? |

So when a fisherman is unable to do what they love, it becomes an empty time with less to look forward to. |

What's shakin'? Unfortunately, probably not you if you have a condition called spinal stenosis. Stenosis is a narrowing of the spine and the holes that nerves pass through in the spine. Narrowing can pinch nerves causing pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the neck and arms and back and legs. |

Football and auto accidents have something in common. Head to head contact and spearing tackles can cause severe trauma to the neck and spinal cord very similar to cervical damage seen as a result of an auto accident. Both violent compression and whiplash damage the disc, bone and nerve structures of the neck. |

Let's talk about discs - the little shock absorbers that buffer one vertebrae from another . |

We also accept Health First commercial plans with out-of-network benefits, although patients will be required to pre-pay at the self pay rate. |

If you are injured or develop pain in your back, neck or joints, your primary care physician, the ER physician at a hospital, or an urgent care doctor may recommend you have an MRI. About 30,000 MRI scans are performed every year, many of those of the back, neck and joints. Magnetic resonance imaging is a form of medical imaging particularly useful in seeing the body's internal structure. Contrast provided by MRI scans provide excellent visual detail of soft tissues and the ability to distinguish between tissue types. |

The State of Florida and other states have become more circumspect, and rightly so, in approving medical practices who write scripts for pain medications. Regulations affecting these 'Pain Clinics' have stiffened and the frequency with which they are audited has increased. We at Deuk Spine Institute applaud these stricter standards. |

Traditional spinal fusion as a fix for disc, vertebrae, and nerve damage issues has been performed for decades. For many surgeons this is what they were taught and what they know, so 400,000 spinal fusions are performed every year in the U.S. Yet as many as three quarters of these old style fusions could be replaced with new, state-of-the-art techniques using laser spine surgery. |

Stiffness and pain in the joints can come from a gradual breakdown or wear-off of the joint’s cartilage. Cartilage normally protects the joint, acts as a shock absorber and allows for smooth movement. Without the usual amount of cartilage, bones rub together, causing pain, swelling and stiffness causing a condition generally known as osteoarthritis. |

Other spine surgeons that use a laser procedure cut or drill holes in your spine to access the damaged disc.
While they may temporarily relieve the pain, drilling holes significantly weakens and destabilizes the spine further damaging your back or neck. Fusion surgery with screws and rods becomes the only solution to this problem.
If bone is removed from your spine, be prepared for the likelihood of a spinal fusion in your future.
We no longer need to cut or drill bones to fix your disc. |
