On July 19, 2012 Dr. Deukmedjian answered questions about the top 10 issues for spine surgeons after the Supreme Court upheld healthcare reform.  According to Becker's Spine Review, "At the end of June, the Supreme Court upheld the individual mandate for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, which aims to reform the healthcare system in America.  The Court upheld ACA but struck down the provision of mandatory Medicaid expansion, leaving this decision to the individual states."

Dr. Ara Deukmedjian, CEO of Deuk Spine Institute, announced today the addition of Dr. Zachariah W. Chambers, fellowship trained in Interventional Pain Medicine, to the multi-specialty practice:  “The demonstrated expertise Dr. Chambers brings with him from the University of Mississippi’s School of Medicine expands Deuk Spine's already deep bench in pain management to Sports Medicine and, in particular, interventional procedures for joints with a focus on back and neck patient issues.  We are extremely pleased to have Zach Chambers join our team.”

In a new plan to meet elder care needs, Dr. Ara J. Deukmedjian. Board Certified Neurosurgeon, has agreed to serve on the Board of Directors for "Helping Seniors of Brevard County, Inc."   The non-profit organization plans to provide a major funding source for senior care services, including medical care to seniors in Brevard County, FL.

At the annual meeting November 4, 2011, Dr. Ara J. Deukmedjian, Neurosurgeon, was elected President of the Brevard County Medical Society.  In accepting the position Dr. Deukmedjian commented: “Healthcare today is constantly changing. Our goal is to help ensure that the patient always remains first and access to quality care is never compromised. I am truly honored to have this incredible opportunity. ”

Time to give credit to the exceptional staff here at Deuk Spine Institute.  As you will hear in Jane's video, our patients nearly always comment on how friendly and welcoming the people are who take care of them.  Jane says, "The people are wonderful... makes you feel like part of the family." 

               Our buddy Disco needs your help.  He’s a spine, with a message…  Insurance companies are turning down patients who need back surgery.  Why?  They don’t want to pay and, let’s face it, spine surgery is expensive.  What’s their excuse for denying coverage?

Two hours in the gym a day, regimented diet, certified trainers and nutritionists guiding progress.  Professional athletes are tuned muscle machines.  You and I may not be the physical specimen of a triathlete nor do we have grueling workouts daily, but there are some similarities between a professional athlete and a regular Joe when it comes to treating back and neck pain.

Reading about a procedure is one thing.  Hearing directly from a patient who has recently had the surgery - and returned to work within days - adds another dimension to the dialogue.  Patients of Deuk Spine Institute are our primary source of new patients because they tell others how well they were treated, how expert our physicians and surgeons are, and the outstanding results from our procedures. But better than our telling you, we let our patients do the talking in a series of videos.

Traditional spinal fusion as a fix for disc, vertebrae, and nerve damage issues has been performed for decades.  For many surgeons this is what they were taught and what they know, so 400,000 spinal fusions are performed every year in the U.S.  Yet as many as three quarters of these old style fusions could be replaced with new, state-of-the-art techniques using laser spine surgery.

At the recent Parrish Medical Center surgery department meeting, Dr. Deukmedjian was elected Surgery Department Chair. Dr. Deuk’s term as Chair begins January 1.  As Chairman of the PMC Surgery Department, Dr. Deuk will participate as a member of Parrish’ Medical Executive Committee.

Stiffness and pain in the joints can come from a gradual breakdown or wear-off of the joint’s cartilage. Cartilage normally protects the joint, acts as a shock absorber and allows for smooth movement.  Without the usual amount of cartilage, bones rub together, causing pain, swelling and stiffness causing a condition generally known as osteoarthritis.

Other spine surgeons that use a laser procedure cut or drill holes in your spine to access the damaged disc.

While they may temporarily relieve the pain, drilling holes significantly weakens and destabilizes the spine further damaging your back or neck.  Fusion surgery with screws and rods becomes the only solution to this problem.  

If bone is removed from your spine, be prepared for the likelihood of a spinal fusion in your future.

We no longer need to cut or drill bones to fix your disc.

Maybe because of their medical training, doctors are typically very selective about the doctor or surgeon they see for their own medical problems. 

Interventional pain management techniques include a variety of procedures to identify and treat back and neck pain, including nerve block injections, epidural injections, select burning of nerve endings, and injections to treat painful facet joints.
